6/9/2008 EARMARK UPDATE:
On Monday, June 9, The Huffington Post had this to say about Boyda and her earmarks:
"Freshman Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Kan., for example, requested 66 earmarks totaling about $172 million in the upcoming appropriations round. Last year, Boyda obtained $20.7 million in solo earmarks, along with almost $18 million more that she requested with other lawmakers."
So much for her claims of "fiscal responsibility."
Original Post:
Today, Nancy Boyda and Dennis Moore voted for a gargantuan budget that includes tax increase for middle-class American families to the tune of $2,345 for the family of four earning $40,000.
Nancy Boyda has proven over and over that she is not interested in actual fiscal responsibility. Here are some highlights of her votes over the last year and a half.
On her MySpace website, Boyda states, “I will support a rollback of...tax cuts.”
Shortly after getting elected, she held true to that promise by voting for a $400 billion tax hike. (Vote here) That was, at the time, the largest tax increase in American history.
Not to be outdone, earlier this year, Boyda voted to pave the way for an even larger tax increase, making this year’s vote the largest tax increase in American history. This time it’s to the tune of $683 billion, costing the average Kansas taxpayer an additional $2,863 in taxes next year. (Vote)
But that’s not the end of it, today she voted again for the $683 billion tax increase that hurts middle-class families the most. Investor’s Business Daily had this to say: “Make no mistake: This tax hike is gargantuan...On average, 116 million taxpayers will see a jump of $1,800 in their annual tax bill. Some 48 million married couples - the heart of the middle class that Democrats say they want to help - will be slapped with an average increase of $3,007. Even the elderly will take a hit - $2,181 on average...Quite a week's work for one Congress.” (Investor’s Business Daily, 6/4/08)
After making “wasteful spending” and “earmark” reform a major campaign issue, Boyda seemed to forget about that promise and instead voted for bill “stuffed full of pork” to the tune of $124,000,000,000. (Vote)
She then proposed over $48,000,000 of her own personal earmarks, including a museum just for convicts in Leavenworth! (Here) (This prison museum was so egregious, that CBS News did a story on it. Watch it here and here.)
But it gets even better on earmarks...
Boyda stated “The earmark process has been abused in the past. Members of Congress have set aside funds for programs that turned out to personally benefit them.” (Here)
But she has steadfastly refused to vote to open up the earmark process, which would allow the public to find out what’s really happening.
Finally, because of her liberal positions on fiscal issues, she wasn’t chosen for the “moderate” Blue Dog coalition. (While we disagree that the “Blue Dogs” are moderate, it is still embarrassing to be too liberal for a even a “moderate” Democrat group.)
Kansas families are struggling to pay for rising food and gas bills. The last thing an elected official should be doing is taking more of Kansans money.
