Weekly Round-Up

Tuesday
We posted about Dennis Moore and all of his traveling on the taxpayer's dime. Read about it here.

Wednesday
There are more abuses of taxpayer dollars from Moore's office. Read about that here.

Also on Wednesday
We found out about another misuse of taxpayer funds by the Governor. Is she really following the Clinton pattern of selling the Lincoln Bedroom by selling out the Governor’s mansion, Cedar Crest?

Party Chairman Kris Kobach had this to say, “Abusing the office of Governor and wasting taxpayer dollars on political trips and events has been a pattern with Kathleen Sebelius. But Sebelius has sunk to a new low with the recent revelation that she hosted an event involving notorious late-term abortionist, George Tiller at the Governor’s mansion in Topeka. Her use of a taxpayer funded facility to honor an individual whose money has fueled her campaigns and personal agenda is appalling. She has abused her stewardship over the people’s house..."

“... It appears that the Governor’s staff is trying to wiggle out from under this colossal mistake by claiming that Tiller purchased his welcome at the Governor’s mansion. Indeed he did. My question to Sebelius is - If Fred Phelps purchased a similar event inside the mansion, would he be welcome too?”

Read about it here and here.

Thursday
The Nick Jordan for Congress campaign is off to a great start. Yesterday, they shattered fundraising records in the 3rd Congressional District while hosting President Bush. It’s clear that Jordan’s message of waking up Washington is resonating in the 3rd District.

Read about it here, here, and here.

While the cat's away, the mice break ethics rules?

Yesterday, in The Hill newspaper, a Washington, DC political publication, a story appeared regarding Dennis Moore’s Chief-of-Staff using his official email account to send out campaign related job postings.

This poses a couple of questions.

  • What other activities are taking place in Moore’s office on the taxpayer’s dime?
  • Why is Moore traveling all over the world, when it is apparent that his office needs additional oversight? (Here's the story.)
  • What are the consequences that result from a misuse of taxpayer money?
You can read the whole article here.

Taxpayers, Traveling and Dennis Moore

Dennis Moore is no friend to the taxpayer. He is on record as being one of the architects of the budget that paves the way for the largest tax hike in American history. (Here's the vote.)

Recently, his taxpayer waste has taken a whole new form. In the last couple of months, Moore has been traveling all over the world on the taxpayer’s dime.

This week he is on a trip to an “undisclosed location” which his office can’t release for “security reasons.” As the Kansas City Star Buzz Blog pointed out, “...Congressional rules on such trips are meant to keep constituents from knowing their congressman is on a taxpayer-paid junket. But then again, maybe he’s working his fingers to the bone in Paris or Geneva or London...” (Read the whole story here.)

Previously, Moore has been to the Greek Islands and Cyprus for an official trade mission, a few weeks later he was back on “official business” visiting Zagreb, Croatia; Brussels, Belgium; and Paris, France.

What we are wondering is this: Could all these “official” trips be payback for being the most partisan member of the Kansas delegation and Moore’s unfailing loyalty to the liberal Speaker, Nancy Pelosi? We will leave the decision up to you.

Senator Brownback and the 105-County Tour

Senator Brownback will be in Olathe today hosting another townhall meeting as part of his 105-county tour. The meeting will start at 3:30 and is at Olathe City Hall in the City Council Chambers. Olathe City Hall is located in downtown Olathe at 100 E. Santa Fe. The meeting is open to the public and the press.

For more information about Senator Brownback's tour, and to find a location in your county click here.

Dennis Moore and Immigration Double-Talk

Dennis Moore has a long history of telling his constituents one thing, and voting in a completely opposite manner in Washington, DC.

Here’s the latest example.

In the Tuesday, May 20, 2008 Kansas City Star, Dennis Moore stated:
“Everyone agrees that illegal immigration is a major problem that the federal government must address. In addition to strengthening our border security, we need an employment verification system that works. We also need to crack down on employers that knowingly exploit these illegal immigrants.”

However, Moore has had the opportunity to support the bipartisan Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act of 2007, which is designed to improve border security and boost immigration law enforcement.

Instead, Moore has followed Nancy Pelosi's lead once again by not signing a "discharge petition" that would give members of Congress who are fighting to secure our borders the opportunity to vote on this important border security legislation.

In the House of Representatives, 188 members have signed the discharge petition to force an up or down vote on the SAVE Act. Only 20 more signatures are needed in order to allow a vote on this important bipartisan legislation. Instead, of following through with what he told his constituents, Moore is once again taking the opposite approach. (To see the Discharge Petition click here.)

This isn’t the only time this has happened.

Moore voted against full funding for the construction of the border fence (Roll Call 490, H.R. 2638, June 15, 2007).

Then he voted to weaken the border fence (Roll Call 1171, H.R. 2764, Dec. 17, 2007).
(This bill weakened border fence law passed in 2006 by ending the requirement for double-layered border fencing and removing the specific locations that the law had required to be among the 700 miles of secured fencing. The bill also withholds $650 million from the border fence until fifteen bureaucratic hoops are jumped through by the Department of Homeland Security.)

And he voted to allow tax payer funding for sanctuary cities that deliberately harbor illegal immigrants (Roll Call 485, H.R. 2638, June 15, 2007).

Then he voted against requiring proof of citizenship to join a union, thereby making it easier for illegal immigrants to join (Roll Call 117, H.R. 800, March 1, 2007).

And finally, he voted to eliminate funding for immigration checks of employees at high-risk, critical infrastructure sites and prevent penalties for smuggling illegal’s (Roll Call 316, H.R. 1684, May 9, 2007).

It’s time to hold Dennis Moore accountable for his double-talk. To find out how, click here.

The Governor and her "ethics"

On Tuesday, the Governor sent an email to her supporters trying to explain her position on refusing jobs and economic development in Kansas. At the bottom of the email was a link to contribute to her campaign.

There was just one little problem. Elected officials are prohibited by law from soliciting money from lobbyists during the legislative session, which isn’t officially over until May 29.

The funny thing is, earlier this year there was legislation passed that clarified this position and added the word “knowingly” to a violation of the ethics provision. When the Governor signed this law, she stated,

“I would hope that all elected officials would act in good faith and not find ways to use this potential flaw to circumvent the spirit of the law...”

But that is exactly what she did.

You can read the whole story here.

And here.

Obama to Slattery: Keep your dirty lobbyist money!

It must be tough to be a lobbyist these days, especially one running for the Senate in the Democrat Party with Barack Obama as the potential nominee.

With Obama having all but clinched the Democratic nomination last night, it’s worth asking what effect his campaign will have on Kansas.

Speculation varies, but one thing is clear—it can’t be good for lobbyist Jim Slattery.

As Kansans know, Slattery stopped working for Kansas fourteen years ago to cash in with special interests. The Associated Press reported last week that he made more than $4 million in 2006 alone.

But it sounds like those millions came at a real price. Consider what Obama had to say about the Kansas Democrat’s choice of profession just yesterday:

“Lobbyists aren’t just part of the system in Washington, they’re part of the problem.”-Sen. Barack Obama, Washington Post, 5/20/08

Given this dim view, it’s understandable why Obama was Slattery’s third choice for President. According to publicly available disclosure reports, in March of 2007 Slattery gave $1,000 each to the Presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson—no doubt hedging his bets like any good Washington lobbyist does.

In May 2007 Slattery gave another $250 to Richardson; and in September 2007 another $1,000 to Clinton.

But he hadn’t hedged enough.

After Obama began his winning streak that propelled him to his status today, Jim Slattery—ever the opportunist—attempted to hop on the Obama bandwagon.

Perhaps hoping no one would notice, Slattery sent Obama’s campaign $50 in February of 2008.

The problem is Obama doesn’t like what Jim Slattery has been up to in Washington the last 14 years. So…Obama sent it back.

It must be tough to be a lobbyist these days. Especially one running for Senate in a party where the Presidential nominee thinks you’re too tainted to give him fifty bucks.

If it wasn’t going to be hard enough to beat popular Senator Pat Roberts in November, an outright rejection by your party’s nominee for President is just another black eye on a campaign that is already treading water. Here’s to another 28-point loss in November for Democrat lobbyist Jim Slattery.

Upcoming Event: Johnson County Elephant Club Lunch

The Johnson County Republican Party’s Elephant Club is hosting its monthly lunch on Tuesday, May 27. The featured speakers are Senate Vice-President John Vratil and House Majority Leader Ray Merrick presenting a wrap-up of the 2008 legislative session.

For more information click here or contact Marvin Kleeb at marvink@alliedstaffing.com.

John McCain: Trouncing Obama in Kansas

A recent Rasmussen Report has John McCain up by 21 percentage points over Barack Obama in Kansas, a 55% to 34% advantage. You can see the whole poll here.

A couple other interesting tidbits in this poll.
“Twenty-eight percent (28%) of Kansas voters are more likely to vote for Obama if Sebelius is on the ticket while 34% say they are less likely to vote for Obama with Sebelius as the Vice-Presidential candidate.” So much for Sebelius's influence in Kansas. Why would Obama pick a Vice-Presidential candidate who can't even deliver her own state?

And, 63% of the people polled oppose an increase in Capitol Gains Taxes—compared with 17% of the people who want them raised. Here’s what Obama has to say about raising those taxes.

Boyda: Wasting taxpayer money

An article over the weekend on http://www.governmentexecutive.com/, highlights an amendment that Nancy Boyda offered during the recent fiscal 2009 Defense authorization bill that would prohibit public-private competition at the Defense Department for 3 years.

The public-private competition is a major policy of the Bush Administration which requires government agencies to get bids on various services to find the best deal and save taxpayer dollars. According to the article, “...it [the amendment] would restrict the department from forcing government employees to vie for their jobs with contractors.... An OMB [Office of Management and Budget] official, who had not seen the recently introduced amendment...said Defense has reported an estimated $2.95 billion in gross savings for public-private competitions completed from fiscal 2003 to fiscal 2007, with a return of approximately $20 for every dollar spent on competition...” (Read the whole article here.)

According to the article, Federal employees unions strongly oppose the Bush Administration’s position and The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers support this amendment.

The old adage states, “Actions speak louder then words.” Nancy Boyda may claim to care about taxpayer savings, but actions are in direct contrast to that statement. She is also proving that she is in the back pocket of big labor.

The residents of the 2nd District deserve better. In November, vote for real change.

Governor promotes fear mongering

In light of the Governor's veto of important voter identification legislation earlier today, the Kansas Republican Party responded with the following:

“The Governor has taken fear mongering to a whole new level with her latest veto,” said Christian Morgan, Executive Director of the Kansas Republican Party. “Without facts to support her bogus claims of ‘disenfranchisement’ the Governor continues to mislead the people of Kansas about securing our election process. Ignoring recent Supreme Court precedent and the demand for a more secure election process, Kathleen Sebelius’s veto is a slap in the face of all Kansas voters.”

“The bill that was vetoed allowed for voters to present 1 of 8 different forms of identification when they went to vote. Additionally, it exempted the disabled, voters over 65, and active-duty military personnel and their families. Yet, the Governor continues to promote fear of disenfranchisement--claims that are obviously false considering the provisions Republican leadership inserted into the bill. The people of Kansas want our elections secure and deserve to have fraud-free elections. Republicans believe securing our elections is a worthy cause, but Kathleen Sebelius and her liberal allies would rather our elections be unsecured.”

“This legislation was an important step towards that goal, and the Governor once again ignored the will of the people in favor of her own liberal agenda.”

Nancy Boyda, Dennis Moore and the worst job performance ever

A recent Gallup poll, released on May 14, finds that this Congress has tied for the lowest approval ratings in United States history.

According to this poll, “Approval of Congress has dipped below 20% for only the fourth time in the 34 years Gallup has asked Americans to rate the job Congress is doing. Today's 18% score, based on a May 8-11 Gallup Poll, matches the record lows Gallup recorded in August 2007 and March 1992."

Interestingly, all of the lowest approval ratings came when Democrats controlled Congress. The inability of Democrat leadership to tackle any of the important issues to Americans is reflected in these poll numbers.

Like many Kansans, there are concerns across the country about the state of the economy, rising fuel prices, and national security issues. All of which the Democrat leadership in Congress promised to address when they took over last January, and all of which they have failed to address.

Instead, the Democrats in Congress are doing things like passing budgets that pave the way for a $683 billion tax increase (the largest in American history), 9,000 pork-barrel earmarks last year, and votes to increase energy produced in the United States.

It’s clear that Nancy Boyda, Dennis Moore, and their Democrat leadership are taking America in the wrong direction. In November, voters in Kansas will have a choice to wake up Washington with new leadership.

Smack Down

I know we are a little late, but I would be remiss if I didn't point out the recent smack-down by Catholic Archbishop Naumann of Kathleen Sebelius on abortion.

Read it here.

Kudos to the Archbishop. I'm glad to see them join the chorus against this Governor.

Where in the World is Kathleen Sebelius?

Afternoon folks.

While, I was working today, what were you doing? Probably working like the rest of us.

What was Kathleen Sebelius doing today, Thursday, May 15?

Spending a little time in her favorite state, Ohio. Not for official state business (although she did find time to comment on the most pressing issue on her mind - Barack Obama) but for another tribute for her dad from her home state of Ohio. She really likes Ohio.

We all know the Governor cares more about Obama and her next government paycheck than the Kansas economy, jobs, and Kansas poverty rates - those are just boring and won't lead to more Vogue photo shoots and certainly won't lead to hot invites to Washington cocktail parties.

Wonder where the Governor is heading next and I wonder how much it's going to cost us taxpayers.

Stay tuned for more from the Sebelius travel trail...

Pat Roberts and Bob Dole at the Wichita Pachyderm Club

The Wichita Pachyderm Club, Inc. just announced that a very special guest will be joining them at their weekly meeting.

United States Senator Pat Roberts is the featured speaker and former United States Senator Bob Dole is planning to drop by. This event will be on Friday, May 16, 2008 beginning at noon. The Pachyderm Club meets at Whiskey Creek Steakhouse located at 233 N. Mosley, in the Old Town District of Wichita.

If you are interested in attending, contact Sarah Skelton at 316-734-3344 or sask2@cox.net.

Obama and Higher Fuel Prices

With the cost of gas going higher and higher--today, it was $3.69 a gallon. The Government is looking for solutions to decrease the cost of fuel.

John McCain is concerned about the effect that these gas prices have on Kansas families, and he has proposed a gas tax holiday for the summer. You can read about it here.

Barack Obama opposes the gas tax holiday, and says he wants to change the high gas prices. However, his position on the issue is exactly the opposite.

Not only that, he is consitently contradicting himself on the campaign trail. While in the Illinois State Senate, he voted for a gas tax holiday and even advocated extending it.
"My suggestion would be that, if we want to, we should extend the suspension of this tax until we have further data." (Sen. Barack Obama, State Of Illinois 91st General Assembly Regular Session Senate Transcript, 11/15/00, www.ilga.gov, pp. 51)

But now he opposes it.
"Obama does not support the 'gas tax holiday' and has said the average motorist would not benefit significantly from such a suspension ..." (Sara Kugler, "Clinton Focuses On Obama's Opposition To Suspending Federal Gas Tax For Summer Driving Months," The Associated Press, 4/28/08)

How does Obama expect to change anything when he can't even make up his own mind about the issue that needs to be changed?

How far left is Kathleen Sebelius on the Holcomb Power Plant issue?

Even Barack Obama disagrees with Sebelius on the use of "clean coal" for energy according to Steve Kraske of The Kansas City Star. (Click here for the whole article.)

The most liberal Senator in Washington agrees that new "clean coal" technologies benefit those state's that utilize them. This is in direct contrast to what Sebelius has been doing in Kansas. What's an even better contrast is that Obama voted for $200 million in clean coal technology in an attempt to save jobs.

Sebelius on the other hand has repeatedly ignored the needs for new jobs in Kansas.

As we have said many times before, Sebelius is just wrong on this issue. She doesn't care that 67% of the elected Representatives and Senators in Kansas support it, or that the expansion of the Holcomb Power Plant will bring 2,400 jobs to western Kansas.

Maybe we should ask Obama to explain it to her.

Kathleen Sebelius: As far left as you think.

Candidate of the Week-State Representative Joe Patton

Joe Patton is great for Kansas and should be re-elected in District 54 in Topeka. During his short time (so far) in Topeka, Joe has led on a variety of issues important to Kansans by serving on the House Judiciary committee and the Health and Human Services committee. Joe is anything but timid about the issues he is passionate about.

Joe cares about Kansas. Tougher sentances for violent criminals, the judicial system, health care, economic development, education, business development and tax policy are the key issues driving Joe’s leadership under the dome and in the 54th District. You can read about Joe's issues here.

Recently, Joe led the way in protecting our families against violent sexual predators by battling for a bill that would forbid granting probation to those convicted of certain sexually violent offenses, and would allow judges to only reduce a violent criminal's sentance to 50 percent less then the recommended sentence guideline.

This is just one example of how Joe Patton is working for Kansas and protecting our families. Speaking personally to Joe, I know he is the man to represent the 54th and is a hard working legislator who puts his constiuents interests first.

For more information about Joe, visit his campaign website and the all-important campaign contribution site.

Joe cares about what you think; so email him at joepatton2001@msn.com.

Question: Why is Kathleen Sebelius mad at the Republican-led legislature?

Answer: Because they refused to increase taxes. That’s right, the woman who ran for re-election as Governor based on fuzzy facts that she “grew the economy…all without a tax increase” is disappointed the Republican-led legislature refused to raise your taxes.

Unfortunately, facts are important and the fact is that Kathleen Sebelius has never seen a tax increase she didn’t like. Whether it’s pushing for the largest tax increase in Kansas history (during her first year in office—a tax increase that was over $300 million) or pushing for a massive tax increase on tobacco this year, Kathleen Sebelius just wants more of our money.

Republicans, on the other hand, don’t want to raise your taxes. In fact, during the last couple of days of the legislative session, Republicans made sure that people over 65 would get a tax break on their property taxes. We believe that it’s your money and that you should decide how to spend it, not the Governor.

Of course, we are trying to see it from Sebelius’s point of view. After all, she has to pay for all the fuel her plane burns flying to important meetings like the NCAA tournament and Final Four sites (in Omaha, Detroit, and San Antonio), the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, the Master’s Golf Tournament in Georgia, and the Kentucky Derby last week in Kentucky.

I think I speak for all Kansans when I say that I appreciate the Republican-led legislature for refusing to raise our taxes during these uncertain economic times. Please call your legislator and thank them for refusing to raise your taxes. Click here to find your legislator and thank them for standing up to the Sebelius administration's zeal for your money.

Have a great weekend.

It's time for Boyda and Moore to choose

It will come as no surprise to people who follow both Dennis Moore and Nancy Boyda that they have a hard time making up their minds on any number of tough issues.

The latest example comes courtesy of the Democrat Presidential Race. Both Moore and Boyda are Super Delegates and will cast 2 of the deciding votes at the National Convention in August. Neither one of them has declared for a candidate.

Maybe they both agree with Obama’s position on small Midwest towns.
“‘You go into these small towns…and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them.’ … ‘And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.’”

“‘So people end up, you know, voting on issues like guns, and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. And they take refuge in their faith and their community and their families and things they can count on. But they don’t believe they can count on Washington.’”
(Washington Post, April 12, 2008)

Or perhaps they fall more in line with Clinton’s views on taxes. On the campaign trail, Clinton has stated that she will “provide tax relief for the middle class,” but she has voted more than 230 times in the U.S. Senate to raise taxes.

The voters of Kansas deserve to know. Who will Boyda and Moore support—the most liberal Senator in the nation who claims half of their constituents are bitter? Or the woman who has voted to raise taxes 230 times?

Perhaps they are just waiting to see who appears to be winning the nomination, and then they can make the “safe” pick. By choosing that course of action, it would just be more of the same lack of leadership that we’ve come to expect from both of them.

John McCain and the Federal Judiciary

Earlier today, Senator John McCain had a major address on his judicial philosophy at Wake Forrest University. This was closely followed by the release of his Justice Advisory Committee.

Here are a couple of excerpts from Senator McCain’s address:
"...All the powers of the American presidency must serve the Constitution, and thereby protect the people and their liberties. For the chief executive or any other constitutional officer, the duties and boundaries of the Constitution are not just a set of helpful suggestions. They are not just guidelines, to be observed when it's convenient and loosely interpreted when it isn't. The clear powers defined by our Constitution, and the clear limits of power, lose nothing of their relevance with time, because the dangers they guard against are found in every time...

"...In America, the constitutional restraint on power is as fundamental as the exercise of power, and often more so... There is one great exception in our day, however, and that is the common and systematic abuse of our federal courts by the people we entrust with judicial power...For decades now, some federal judges have taken it upon themselves to pronounce and rule on matters that were never intended to be heard in courts or decided by judges...

"...activist lawyers and activist judges follow a different method. They want to be spared the inconvenience of campaigns, elections, legislative votes, and all of that...The sum effect of these capricious rulings has been to spread confusion instead of clarity in our vital national debates, to leave resentment instead of resolution, and to turn Senate confirmation hearings into a gauntlet of abuse...

"... I have my own standards of judicial ability, experience, philosophy, and temperament. And Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito meet those standards in every respect. They would serve as the model for my own nominees if that responsibility falls to me.... The surest way to restore fairness to the confirmation process is to restore humility to the federal courts. In federal and state courts, and in the practice of law across our nation, there are still men and women who understand the proper role of our judiciary. And I intend to find them, and promote them, if I am elected president...

"... I will look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law, and a proven commitment to judicial restraint. I will look for people in the cast of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and my friend the late William Rehnquist -- jurists of the highest caliber who know their own minds, and know the law, and know the difference. My nominees will understand that there are clear limits to the scope of judicial power, and clear limits to the scope of federal power. They will be men and women of experience and wisdom, and the humility that comes with both. They will do their work with impartiality, honor, and humanity, with an alert conscience, immune to flattery and fashionable theory, and faithful in all things to the Constitution of the United States..."

The Chairs of McCain’s Justice Advisory Committee are our own Senator Sam Brownback and Theodore B. Olson, the former Solicitor General of the United States. (You may remember that Mr. Olson was the attorney who argued the recount case for President George W. Bush before the Supreme Court, and his wife, Barbara, was killed in the Terrorist attacks on 9/11.)

For more information about John McCain’s vision for the Federal Judiciary click here.

Boyda and Weakening National Security

During her first year and a half in Congress, Nancy Boyda has consistently demonstrated that she is her own worst enemy. The Kansas GOP has been happy to point out these foibles, and will continue to do so. Recently, Boyda called us "damn liars." Evidently, the truth hurts.

Here are some facts on the FISA Legislation that Boyda overlooks when discussing it.

  • It applies only to foreign terrorists outside the United States. No civil liberties of American citizens are in jeopardy.
  • Boyda opposes protecting telecom companies from frivolous lawsuits from groups like the ACLU. The Senate passed legislation would allow these telecom companies to work hand-in-hand with our intelligence community to protect us from foreign threats.
  • Boyda is trying to make our intelligence experts go through a bureaucratic legal process to be able to monitor terrorists outside the United States. The Senate passed legislation puts the power in the hands of intelligence experts and allows them to move quickly to monitor threats.

Here’s a brief video that sheds more light on the situation.

Boyda has also voted for a sham bill on this issues, simply to get some political cover. This bill was opposed by a bi-partisan group of Senators who are concerned about America’s security. This same group of Senators has passed the right kind of legislation that would protect Americans. (House Roll Call 145)

And, to top it all off she actually voted to monitor climate change as a “national security threat.” (House Roll Call 117)

Boyda and her missteps are bad for Kansas. In November, vote for real change.

Moore becomes Pelosi's lap dog

Last Monday, there was an article in The Weekly Standard about how Dennis Moore and the Blue Dog Coalition has become the lap-dog of Nancy Peolsi’s Congress--by failing to wield their influence and instead caving to the liberal Speaker's wishes. This comes as no surprise to those who have watched Moore's record over the last year since Democrats took control of Congress.

Here's a quick excerpt from the article.
"On almost every issue, the freshman Blue Dogs have failed to advance their campaign agendas, which were carefully tailored to their moderate constituencies. From the war on terror, to taxes and the budget, to immigration and free trade, the Blue Dogs may talk tough, but they're more Yorkie than German Shepherd when confronted with Pelosi's iron grip."

"One would think the Blue Dog coalition, with its 48 members, would have more sway in a House in which Democrats have only a 36-seat edge over Republicans. Instead, after initial bursts of rhetoric contrary to Pelosi's positions, most of them caved to the party leadership, even when that meant stepping out of alignment with their districts."

Click here for the whole article.

And on Thursday, The Washington Times had an editorial highlighting a similar topic. They said,

"For more than two months, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has denied members of that chamber the opportunity to vote on one of the most important pieces of national security legislation before Congress this year. That legislation is a bipartisan bill passed by the Senate in February that would grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies which helped the government monitor terrorist communications after September 11..."

"...What is happening is no mystery: The Blue Dogs are under intense pressure from powerful Democratic Party constituencies, including the trial lawyers, who see litigation against large firms like AT&T as a potential goldmine..."

Click here to read the whole article.

As a leader in the Blue-Dog coalition, Dennis Moore is once again demonstrating his propensity to say one thing in the 3rd District and vote the opposite way in Washington, DC. This latest round of debate on the FISA legislation is the most recent example of how Moore is part of the broken system in Washington that needs to be replaced.

Where in the World is Kathleen Sebelius?

Being that this is a new blog, we will have a lot of firsts in the coming weeks. This is no different.

This is the first in the series "Where in the World is Kathleen Sebelius?" Last week, the Governor's travels took her to the Kentucky Derby to campaign for Barack Obama. That’s right folks, Kathleen Sebelius was once again away from Kansas attending yet another sporting event (read about her other sporting event attendance at the Master's Golf Tournament here and of course she was at numerous college basketball games during the NCAA Tournament) while the Kansas Legislature passed important legislation regarding health care, discussed and negotiated the state budget and, well, did their jobs as public servants.

We realize the Governor can't be involved in everything going on in Kansas and I'm sure her spokeswoman will have yet another excuse for why she was out of state for Barack Obama.

Likewise, I have every confidence that Sebelius has reimbursed the taxpayers for the use of the state airplane, and I'm sure that if any Kansas Democratic Party officials like Larry Gates tagged along, the Kansas Democrat Party has reimbursed the taxpayers of the Kansas for the airfare.

It just makes this Kansan wonder - besides vetoing legislation that would have brought thousands of jobs to Kansas (and makes up for the jobs that Sebelius has lost in the last few years), would have invested $3.6 Billion and was supported by 67% of Kansas elected Representatives and Senators across the state - what exactly does Kathleen Sebelius do for the state of Kansas?

Just some food for thought.

I hope you enjoy this ongoing series. I'm sure there will be many posts on the Sebelius travel schedule...after all, she simply can't wait to get out of here to campaign for her favorite politician, Barack Obama.

Karl Rove is coming to Kansas

Party Chairman Kris Kobach, National Committeeman-Elect Mike Pompeo, and Party Treasurer David Thorne are hosting a Victory Luncheon with special guest Karl Rove in Wichita.

Rove is the former Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush. He was recently named the #1 Most Influential Political Pundit on cable TV (You can read the whole article here.) Rove is highly acclaimed as the "architect" of the President's two election victories.

The event will be on Thursday, May 15. For more information contact us at republicanparty@ksgop.org.

Highlight Candidate of the Week: State Senator Julia Lynn

This is the first installment of the Highlight Candidate of the Week series on this blog by the Kansas Republican Party. This week I will highlight the campaign of Kansas State Senator Julia Lynn from the 9th District in Olathe.

First off, let me direct you to her great website, and ask that you pay particular and special attention to the portion of the site to contribute to Senator Lynn’s campaign by clicking here.

If you cannot contribute please donate your time to volunteer, bumper sticker for your car or truck or yard for a yard sign. Senator Lynn is running a strong campaign based on traditional Kansas values and deserves to be re-elected this November. Read Senator Lynn’s positions on the important issues of the day here.

Senator Lynn is facing a party-switcher in Ron Wimmer. Gotta love those Johnson County political opportunist party-switchers like Paul Morrison…where is he anyway?

Senator Lynn is a strong candidate, passionate legislator and respected Kansas businesswoman who has provided responsible leadership for the people of Olathe.

Hard work wins this district. Senator Lynn has been hard at work raising money and working hard in Topeka for the people of the 9th District. I am confident Senator Lynn will work tirelessly to retain her seat in the Kansas Senate.

Key Endorsements in Johnson County District Attorney’s Race

Last week, Johnson County District Attorney Candidate Steve Howe announced that Senator’s Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts were endorsing him.

Brownback stated, “I’m proud to endorse Steve Howe for Johnson County District Attorney. Steve has 18 years experience as a prosecutor in both Topeka and Johnson County and is a man of deep faith and conviction. We need a principled and dedicated man for this open seat and Steve Howe is our man.”

And Pat Roberts said, “I am pleased to support Steve's candidacy for Johnson County District Attorney. I believe that he has the right skills that a position of this importance requires.”

Howe followed that up this week with another series of strong endorsements from county leaders including: County Commissioner Ed Eilert, County Commissioner Doug Wood and County Commissioner Dave Lindstrom as well as a coalition of Johnson County Mayors such as Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach, Mission Mayor Laura McConwell, Olathe Mayor Mike Copeland, Prairie Village Mayor Ron Shaffer, Kansas House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, and State Representatives Jeff Colyer and Arlen Siegfried.

This follows endorsements from: former Senator Nancy Kassebaum-Baker, former Congressman Larry Winn, Jr., and former Congresswoman Jan Meyers.

Activist Charlotte O’Hara and Attorney Greg Musil are leading Howe’s campaign committee and Civic leader Terry Dunn and former Attorney General Bob Stephan chair Howe’s steering committee.
